Week 3 – 25/01/22

Exhibition

This week we began to think about different ways in which we might exhibit or distribute our work, individually and as a potential grad show. I have recently began to think about this myself anyway, and I think that my film might be best suited to a gallery setting as opposed to the previous festival distribution route I had imagined taking; I think it would still be worthwhile trying to get it shown at some festivals though.

In the class discussion the CCA was mentioned for a possible grad show, so I have been thinking about how it could be exhibited there. There are so many different ways to display a single screen installation, but I think it would be best to keep it very simple. A single wall mounted screen and a set of headphones. I had considered using a period relevant TV to display the film to add a sculptural element, but I’m unsure if mid-2000’s TV are recognisable enough to bring a viewer back – this was kind of the time that flat screen’s began to emerge and it might just read as cost-cutting by going with a cheap screen as opposed to a stylistic choice.

I have settled on something like this.

I modelled this after the Intermedia Gallery at the CCA, as I feel that this would suit my project best – but it would realistically work anywhere and isn’t exactly a complex installation.

If I was to pursue a solo installation I think it would need some additional material; some complementary photography on other walls – possibly incorporating other artists who have documented JHQ (a friend of mine Alex Colley does have some unreleased photos from JHQ which maybe could be suitable).
